Suleiman: I don’t take sides

After weeks of silence over a campaign to overthrow him that was spearheaded by former minister Wiam Wahab , President Michel Suleiman said in an interview with As Safir that he has “made tough decisions” taking into consideration the balance between Muslims and Christians and all other political factions.

In remarks published Tuesday Suleiman said he is “not hesitant” and his decisions did not result from weakness. “I will always keep my consensual stance … I don’t take sides. On the contrary, I tilt towards all Lebanese sides.” (more…)

Body of UAE ruler’s brother found after crash

Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al NahyanThe body of the managing director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Fund was found Tuesday, four days after he disappeared following a plane crash in Morocco, the official Moroccan news agency reported.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had been missing since his glider plane crashed into a lake in the north African country on Friday.

The late sheikh was a brother of the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sheikh Ahmed was also chairman of the board of trustees of the Zayed Foundation for Charity and Humanitarian Works, said WAM, the news agency. (more…)

MP Khalil: Amal is not behind delaying municipal elections

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Saad Hariri at the Grand Serail on Tuesday, Amal Movement MP Ali Hassan Khalil denied rumors that the upcoming municipal elections would be postponed for a year. He added his bloc was not behind the idea of delaying the elections. (more…)

Municipal elections may be delayed for another year

baroud -0209Interior Minister Ziad Baroud officially called on voters on Tuesday to take part in the municipal elections due this summer.

According to the Constitution, Baroud had to make the announcement before Thursday .

“A decision to hold the first phase of municipal elections in Mount Lebanon on May 2 has been sent to the official Gazette for publication,” Baroud said. (more…)
