Michael, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed, injured, tortured, malnutritioned due to these sanctions. Saddam was overthrown, wow, what an achievement. This has, believe it or not, lead to Iran's rise in the ME today. What have these sanctions truely achieved? Iraq never had these so called WMD's and it was all a farce. If you agree that civilians should be the ones paying the price then good for you, I on the other hand do not. As for Libya, Qaddafi continues to defy the West at every chance he gets (look up how the whole EU courted him because of the Switzerland incident), and he is still in power and the sanctions did not change his position one bit. South Africa had sanctions imposed upon it for years before the apartheid govt came to an end, and I assure you it was not due to those sanctions. Vietnam??? Vietnam kicked the US's ass and forced it to accept a communist govt which it is gladly dealing with today. Understand that sanctions bring destruction to the common man and not to the govt itself sir, this is what I am trying to convey.

Jeff, just to use your examples: Iraq has been invaded and saddam dead, libya has delivered its atomic weapons to the USA and gaddafi was bombed in the 80s or 70s and lost one of his family members, south africa? why south africa is here? anyway, south africa is democratic and the apartheid is dead as black presidents are being elected. I will add some examples to illustrate the cenario for you: Japan: japan was an a strong industrial empire, they were fanatic (Kamikazee much more fanatic if you compare them to today self-suicide bombers). What happened with japan: 2 bombs finished the war and japan today is a civilized country and international economic power. Do you want more examples?

What a joke! Have they not learnt their lesson with sanctions. Look how well they worked in Iraq, Libya, South Africa to name a few. Sanctions only put pressure on regular citizens and do not touch the political and military elite. If the US is so adament about this nuclear issue, why not get its CIA to perform a revolution from within Iran? I mean they do it all the time. I'll tell you why, because they can't. Iran is not a central american country that can be manipulated. The council is grasping at straws, and these new sanctions, like the others, will backfire in their faces.
