FPM MP: Security in Lebanon will deteriorate if Hezbollah accused of Hariri’s murder


Free Patriotic Movement MP Michel Helou told OTV on Thursday that the security situation in Lebanon will deteriorate if Hezbollah is accused of being behind the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Palestinian shot dead in West Bank by Israeli soldiers

A Palestinian man has been shot dead by Israeli troops after entering a Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

Syria bans full Islamic face veils at universities

Syria has forbidden the country’s students and teachers from wearing the niqab — the full Islamic veil that reveals only a woman’s eyes — taking aim at a garment many see as political.

The ban shows a rare point of agreement between Syria’s secular, authoritarian government and the democracies of Europe: Both view the niqab as a potentially destabilizing threat. (more…)

Connelly: US will not support forced naturalization of Palestinians in Lebanon

Maura Connelly, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department Near Eastern Affairs bureau, and former charge d’affaires at the U.S. embassy in Damascus, was nominated last month by US president Barack Obama to be the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon.
