At least six killed in a traffic accident south of Beirut

At least six people were killed and 20 others injured on Tuesday in a traffic involving several trucks and other vehicles on the Jiyeh highway, south of Beirut.

A Lebanese soldier was among the dead. The dead and the injured were taken to several hospitals in the region. (more…)

Geagea:The conflict is between the logic of state and statelessness

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea told a visiting delegation from the a Zahle University that the latest events in Lebanon are the result of a conflict between the logic of the state and the logic of statelessness.

Shouf reconciliation behind Aoun’s attack against Suleiman, report

Ad-Diyar newspaper reported on Tuesday that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun criticized President Michel Suleiman because of the former’s frustration that Suleiman presided over a reconciliation meeting in the Chouf village of Brih between Druze residents and Christian returnees on August 28. Oghassabian: Vows to resolve border issue with Syria

A meeting of the technical committee to control and monitor the border with Syria was held Monday at he Grand Serail and was chaired by by Lebanese PM Saad Hariri

Following the meeting State Minister Jean Oghassabian said that preventing the smuggling of goods across the Lebanese-Syrian border was facing internal and external obstacles. (more…)

Suleiman: Politicians should speak politely

In response to Aoun’s attack Lebanon President Michel Suleiman said in a statement issued from his office on Monday:

“Any public figure granted access to the media should refrain from wielding accusations for the sake of personal interest and should use “balanced, quiet and constructive speech.” (more…)

Jumblatt pushing for a Hariri-Nasrallah meeting


Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt has expressed relief at the phone conversation held between PM Saad Hariri and Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah’s political assistant Hussein Khalil on Saturday night.

“Thank God they agreed on calm. This is the minimum required,” Jumblatt told As Safir newspaper in remarks published Monday. (more…)

Hariri: ‘We want a moderate state where there is no extremism’

Lebanon Prime Minister Saad Hariri has admitted that the March 14 alliance had unfairly rushed to accuse Syria of assassinating his father and that false witnesses had misled the investigation into former PM Rafik Hariri’s assassination.
