Hostage case at Baghdad church ends in bloodbath

Iraqi antiterrorist forces stormed a church where gunmen had taken close to 100 hostages on Sunday in an afternoon of chaos that became a bloodbath. At least 30 hostages and 7 security officers were killed, and 41 hostages and 15 security force members were wounded, according to a source at the Ministry of the Interior. (more…)

Suicide Bomber Injures 22 in Istanbul

A male suicide bomber injured at least twenty-two people in an attack aimed at a police unit in the busiest local and tourist district in Istanbul on Sunday morning, the city governor’s office said. (more…)

Sfeir: Lebanon should be for all sects

Lebanon’s Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir told Al-Jazeera television on Saturday: “If we want to put an end to political assassinations in Lebanon then the international tribunal should issue its indictment and be specific naming those who committed the crime.”

“If we want matters to continue as they are, then the assassinations will continue, which would harm Lebanon and other nations as well,” he added. (more…)

History Provides Comfort for STL


One of the more bizarre reports to emerge from the attack on United Nations investigators at a Beirut gynecology clinic this week was the suggestion that some of the assailants who stole documents from those probing the death of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri were men dressed as women.
