Aoun, Sarkozy met in Paris

The leader of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) Michel Aoun who arrived arrived Sunday in France held talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday.

Aoun traveled on the same flight to Paris as MP Walid Jumblatt and the two sat next to each other, according to local reports.

According to local reports Aoun and Sarkozy discussed the recent development in Lebanon.

Aoun’s visit comes days after France’s Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner visited Lebanon and expressed his country’s support for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Hezbolah has attacked STL and branded it as an “Israeli project,” and has revealed that some members of the party would be named in the STL indictment.

Al-Akhbar newspaper quoted a French diplomatic source as saying that France insists that there is no going back on the STL is under any circumstances, as such a step would prevent justice and put the credibility of the international community in doubt.

The STL is the first place where we hear of investigators saying: “oh look, false witnesses, too bad there is no link between them and the culprit!”. Even in cheesy detective TV shows, it’s a given that the false witnesses would lead you to the culprit if someone bothered investigating them. Yet, STL’s false witnesses were just let go. Mayeb its focus is on provoking internal strife, and they can’t bother with things like finding culprits.
