Maronite leaders agree over drafting a new electoral law

The meeting of Lebanon’s Maronite leaders which was chaired by Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai ended on Friday after the participants agreed to follow up on the drafting of a new electoral law.

The participants included Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh, Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and Phalange party leader Amin Gemayel.

“An agreement was reached to keep working on a proposal for a new electoral law, which guarantees equal and just representation for all Lebanese factions ,” said a statement issued at the Maronite Patriarchate in Bkirki.

The statement added that “the Christians believe the electoral law is the key to ensure joint coexistence and sectarian balance in the country.”

We wait with bated breath to see a viable ‘new’.

As long as, the sectarian political representation remains than any new electoral law will be another farce attempt by the Lebanese bourgeois political establishment.

The Middle East isn’t ready for instant secularism.

I think the BASIC reason for the youth involvement – which began the ‘Spring’ fling – is because they ARE ready for it, but the concept is getting lost in the shuffles with middle-aged ‘hangers on’ and interweaving by various religious bodies promoting ‘change for money’, not any freedom of thought.
Of course, if it had been ONLY teenagers involved, they would have brained them.
So you’re right .. it will be a long row to hoe … another generation or 2.

If everyone has to report back to their ‘home town’ to do that, they won’t. The gas prices are too high. :-)

It seems the borders are so porous from both Israel and Syria that the ‘count’ changes every week anyway.
Hell .. even the Hezzys can’t figure out who’s in their cave. :-)
