Mother, 6 children found dead in Beirut

Assad praises Moscow’s ‘balanced’ position on Syria

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday praised Moscow’s “balanced” position on Syria, in talks with a Russian delegation on a mission to help end the government crackdown on anti-regime protests.

Assad welcomed the “balanced and constructive Russian position toward the security and stability of Syria,” the state-run SANA news agency reported. (more…)

Hamas wants UN bid to include all Palestinian territory

The Islamist Hamas movement said on Sunday that it does not support a Palestinian push for UN membership based on 1967 borders and wants the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state on all of historical Palestine, including the land that is now called Israel. (more…)

Israeli PM predicts Palestinian statehood bid will fail

Israel’s prime minister predicted on Sunday that the Palestinians’ quest for U.N. membership would fail because it bypasses negotiations with the Jewish state, and said he was working close with Washington to ensure the statehood bid withers in the Security Council.

Syrian activists call for mass anti-Assad protests

Syrian activists on Sunday criticized “Baathist education” as the school year began in the country amid ongoing protests against President Bashar Assad.

“We want to tell the regime that its educational system is rejected because it is exploited by al-Assad to consolidate his government’s influence and brainwash our children,” a group of college students wrote on Facebook. (more…)

MP Hamadeh: dominance of Hezbollah arms violates election laws
