Syrian envoy claims most arms are smuggled from Lebanon

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel Karim Ali on Tuesday claimed that “the largest amount of smuggled arms is coming from a brotherly country, Lebanon.”

“Smuggling arms and armed men, hosting deserters and mercenaries does not reflect a policy of disassociation,” Ali told Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television station. (more…)

Russia slams UN Syria draft resolution

A top Russian diplomat has assailed a Western-Arab draft U.N. resolution on Syria as pushing the country on the “path to civil war.”

“The Western draft Security Council resolution on Syria does not lead to a search for compromise,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “Pushing this resolution is a path to civil war.” (more…)

U.S. seeks to allay Russia concerns on UN plan on Syria

The United States is seeking to overcome Russian objections to a proposed U.N. resolution against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by allaying concerns it could open the door to a Libya-style military intervention in Syria, a senior U.S. official said on Monday. (more…)

Free Syrian Army claims taking control of a Homs suburb

Syrian activists say that in the last few days there has been a spike in violence in the city of Homs. Fighters from the Free Syria Army claim they have taken control of a Homs suburb.

Video, taken from a cell phone, appears to show Free Syria Army fighters celebrating as a rocket-propelled grenade destroys a government tank. Two soldiers on board manage to flee under heavy fire. (more…)
