"The Syrian regime poses the first and last danger to the independent movement in Lebanon," Jumblatt told the Progressive Socialist Party's General Assembly in a meeting held in the town of Baakline, in the Shouf region of Mount Lebanon southeast of Beirut.

The Democratic gathering parliamentary bloc leader warned that if the ruling March 14 coalition loses the next parliamentary elections Lebanon would return to Syrian tutelage.

"If we lose the 2009 elections, it would be a great setback and Lebanon will officially go back to the Syrian orbit," Jumblatt said.

He accused Syria of wiping out free thinking.

"The Syrian regime succeeded in destroying the independent Palestinian decision," Jumblatt said.
