Anti-regime and pro-regime protests for Syria held in downtown Beirut

A protest in support of the Syrian revolution and another in support of the Syrian regime were held on Saturday afternoon in Beirut, the National News Agency reported.

The protest in support of the Syrian revolution was held in Martyrs’ Square in Downtown Beirut, the report said, adding that protesters called for freedom and justice and chanted for overthrowing the Syrian regime. (more…)

14 students injured in Beirut over civil war history book

Clashes broke out on Saturday between security forces and students affiliated with the Kataeb party and the National Liberal Party (NLP) who were staging a demonstration against a curriculum proposal for a Lebanese history book in Downtown Beirut near the Grand Serail. Lebanon stops man attempting to smuggle ancient coins to Germany

Protests against the Syrian regime held in Beirut

Over 100 demonstrators on Friday gathered in Beirut’s Tariq al-Jdeedeh neighborhood to protest against Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime.

Syria has witnessed anti-regime protests since mid-March 2011. The United Nations estimates that more than 7,500 people have been killed in the regime’s crackdown on dissent. (more…)

Passenger traffic to Lebanon drops more than 50%

Passenger traffic to Lebanon’s Rafik Hariri International Airport declined in excess of 50 percent in the first week of August compared to the same period last month, with the holy month of Ramadan and unrest in Syria playing a key role in the fall.

Air passenger traffic fell in the first week of August from a daily average of 15,000 to 7,000 which is in excess of 50 percent less than traffic recorded for the same period in the month of July.

On the other hand more people are departing. The daily average of passengers departing from Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut was at 10,600 in the first week of August compared 7,000 to 8,000 passengers in July. (more…)
