Iran’s consul in Oslo quit his job, refuses to return home

Iran’s consul general in Oslo confirmed Thursday he quit his job in protest against Tehran’s violent repression of opposition demonstrators and said he would not return to Iran for fear of repercussions.
“If I go back I don’t know what will happen,” Mohammed Reza Heydari told AFP in a telephone interview.
“For me, it’s not possible. My friends have told me that I will have problems if I go back,” he said, adding that Iranian authorities had asked him, via the embassy, to return to Tehran.
“I sent my resignation to the charge d’affaires. I told him that it was impossible for me to continue. I did it for the people, I did it for (Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein) Mousavi,” he said. AFP

Iranian diplomat in Norway quits over protests

A diplomat at the Iranian embassy in Norway told Norwegian television on Wednesday that he had resigned in protest over a crackdown on demonstrators in Iran but the government in Tehran denied the report.
“It was the Iranian authorities’ treatment of demonstrators during the Christmas week that made me realize I couldn’t continue,” public broadcaster NRK quoted Mohammed Reza Heydari as saying.
NRK, which said it had spoken to Heydari, presented his quotes in text rather than audio or video form.
Heydari, who NRK said has served as a consul at the embassy for the last three years, was not reachable for comment. Reuters
