Egypt’s military ruler on Tuesday decreed a partial lifting of the nation’s hated emergency laws, while saying the draconian measures would still apply to crimes committed by “thugs.”

Egypt’s ElBaradei pulls out of presidential race

Egypt’s reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei said Saturday he is pulling out of the country’s presidential race to protest the military’s failure to put the country on the path to democracy.

The 69-year-old Nobel laureate, who has been seen as a driving force behind the movement that forced former President Hosni Mubarak to step down, said in a statement that the conditions for a fair presidential election are not in place. (more…)

Egypt elections to begin on 28 November

Egypt’s first parliamentary elections since Hosni Mubarak was ousted as president will begin on 28 November, the country’s military rulers have announced.

The wife of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has agreed to hand over assets to the state after being held in a corruption probe, officials say.

They say Suzanne Mubarak will turn over a villa in a Cairo suburb and some $3m (£1.9m) held in bank accounts in Egypt.
