Mr Mushaima, a senior Shia figure considered a radical by many, returned after the Bahraini government dropped charges against him, a move to appease protesters demanding changes.

In another concession, the king sacked four government ministers.

Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators marched in the capital, Manama, as protests continue for a 13th day.

Mr Mushaima is known for his strong opposition to the ruling Sunni dynasty, and was sentenced in absentia last year on charges of trying to overthrow the government.

He was welcomed by supporters at the airport, where he told the BBC that he wanted genuine democratic reform that could turn Bahrain into a constitutional monarchy.

“We want a real constitution. They’ve promised us (one) before and then did whatever they wanted to,” Mr Mushaima told reporters at the airport.

The BBC’s Owen Bennett-Jones in Manama said that Mr Mushaima’s Haq Movement has a significant following in Bahrain’s Shia community and his return could make a difference to the political situation.

Bahraini Shi'ite opposition leader Hassan Mushaimaa speaks to supporters in Pearl Square in Manama

Shia account for about 70% of the country’s 525,000 people.

Mr Mushaima has a reputation as being a radical. In the past, he has named members of the royal family as being corrupt and called for the king to be subject to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, opposition protesters marched from the capital’s landmark Pearl Square to the office of Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa ibn Salman al-Khalifa.

They called for him to resign after 40 years in power.

Many waved Bahraini flags and chanted: “The people want the fall of the regime”.

Concessions

The government’s decision to drop charges against Mr Mushaima is one of the concessions that it has offered the opposition in the hope of securing its participation in a process of national dialogue.

King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa also sacked the ministers responsible for housing, electricity and water, health, and cabinet affairs. They include two members of the royal family.

The question now is whether the government is willing to offer enough to heal the deepening rifts in Bahraini society, our correspondent says.

The protesters are calling for a genuinely democratic elected parliament. They agree that if any minister is to be sacked, it should be the prime minister, our correspondent says.

Bahrain – home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet – is the first Gulf country to be thrown into turmoil by the wave of unrest sweeping the Arab world.

On Friday, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen visited Bahrain and described the country as a critical long-time ally.

In an interview with Al-Hayat newspaper to be published on Wednesday, Major Abdel Meneem al-Houni, who has resigned from his post as Libya’s Arab League envoy, confirmed Sadr’s death.

Houni, who was also Libyan leader Moammar Qaddafi’s ally during the country’s 1969 revolution, said that Sadr was buried in the Libyan region of Sebha.

The Lebanese Amal Movement – headed by Speaker Nabih Berri – has repeatedly said that Libya is responsible for Sadr’s disappearance in 1978.

Hundreds of Libyan protestors have died in a wave of unprecedented demonstrations that have rocked Libya for the past seven days, with protestors taking over several cities in the east of the country and calling for Qaddafi’s resignation.

Qaddafi ordered his followers Tuesday evening to crush uprisings against his 41-year rule and vowed to fight to the death as he swatted away growing outrage over the bloody crackdown.

Yemen’s government and rebel leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi agreed late on Thursday to a truce that began at midnight (2100 GMT). The truce was welcomed on Friday by Shiite Muslim Iran, which has criticized Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the fighting on the government side.
Interior Minister undersecretary Mohammed al-Qawsi, whose car was shot at by rebels, told Reuters minor violations had occurred because not all rebel fighters were aware of the ceasefire, but that the deal still held.
He said rebels had killed one soldier and wounded seven outside the northern city of Saada.
“There are some small violations here and there, and there have also been some violations by rebels outside the city of Saada,” Qawsi said.

A double bombing Friday in the southern city of Karbala killed at least 32 people and wounded over 100 as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims commemorated a major Shiite Muslim holy day.
The attack took place at the eastern entrance to the city as pilgrims from around Iraq were leaving the commemorations in the city center. First a car bomb exploded near a hospitality tent erected to offer refreshments, killing 10 people, according to Karbala police. Moments later a suicide bomber driving a car plowed into the carnage left by the first explosion, and killed another 22.
It was the third major attack against pilgrims this week, and coincided with a sharp escalation in violence ahead of crucial national elections due in March. LAT
