Arslan recommends Jumblatt as Interior Minister

The head of the Lebanese Democratic Party MP Talal Arslan said during a press conference:”I repeat my nomination of Progressive Socialist Party ( PSP) leader MP Walid Jumblat to personally assume the position of interior minister.

Arslan cautioned against classifying ministries as sovereign and non-sovereign, calling this an unconstitutional invention . During the 2009 cabinet formation sovereign portfolios were listed as : Justice, Interior, Finance and Foreign Affairs . General Michel Aoun was the one who brought up the issue of sovereign ministries and insisted in 2009 of having one of the 4 , but he failed in achieving his goal.

This time around Aoun is insisting on getting the ministry of interior , but president Michel Suleiman won’t let him have it.

Arslan is reportedly making the suggestion to end the dispute between Aoun and Suleiman over the cabinet formation.

In the outgoing cabinet the Interior ministry is headed by Minister Ziad Baroud , who represents president Suleiman

The Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah brought down PM Saad Hariri’s government on January 12 over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s ( STL) indictment which is widely expected to implicate Hezbollah members in the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri in 2005 .

Nagib Mikati, who was backed by Hezbollah and its March 8 allies including Jumblatt and Mohammad Safadi, was appointed by president Michel Suleiman as PM-designate to form and head the next cabinet , giving Hezbollah and its allies increased leverage in the country and provoking widespread protests.

Jumblatt who, along with his parliamentary bloc had the decisive vote in the naming of PM designate was reportedly subjected to repeated threats by Hezbollah.

Why is it always , same leaders being roatated to take governement chairs of Lebanon, is this democracy lebanon is proud off, same (outdated) brains taking chairs again and again, ,,,, where are the educated , open-minded, younger people ? people who would thing of doing something else other than looking into fighting with a rival, because they forgot to do anything else which could be contructive?
the young lebanese need to stop this ( gang phenomenon) by not supporting them , and president should give few new efficient, independent, intellectual people some chance, this current ( gang) thing would not work, try some changes , try some people who would appraciate and love this beatiful country

I’m so ashamed to be Druze, OH MY GOD !!!!

  • PROPHET.T

Druze or Sunni or what have you, It makes no difference as long as these people are qualified and willing to follow the law and the constitution. As for Walid , He ‘s not qualified ..and not progressive or democratic. He’s a sect lord, who use to be a warlord.
    No warlords in the government.

look like iam the drunk in here this suppose to be your replay PROPHET

The government in Lebanon has been rotating warlords since The Beatles were active. The Ta’if Agreement made sure that stayed longer.

      What’s your point?

      • PROPHET.T

        Kareem,
My point is that we need to get rid of all of these warlords. The Taif agreement is not a holly agreement.
Total political reform is needed if we ever going to have a respectable state.

How? That’s the issue. There are a few independent people who run for parliament but literally get 10 votes. It’s a huge psychological struggle. I still have people who support a party telling me you’re not Christian/Muslim..etc so you won’t understand .. lezem inghayer il 3a2lieh kamen

        Kareem,
I agree with you ,and I realize that the task of true reform is a tremendous one.
The reforms we seek will need major constitutional amendments, new election law based on very small districts, separation of religion and state, forbid all religious leaders from talking politics, do away with sectarian system all together, elect the president (keep maronite ) directly by the public, independent judiciary system, fair and tough law enforcement ,establishing new laws to fight corruption among politicians and officials, as well as the public, set a two 4 year term for th e president, and reform laws which govern political parties is a way to make it illegal to have parties that are affiliated with sects, and reform laws which govern the media where media outlets can’t be the mouth piece of political parties
making these changes, and enforcing the laws will eventually change the attitude, the behavior ,and mentality of people. It won’t happen over night, but with time changes will take place.

That would be great, although I don’t know why you would want to keep the prime minister as Sunni and president as Christian..would be nice for other sects to have those rights, but otherwise that would be an ideal reform…the problem is that was we gotta get rid of EVERYONE…both sides..and people rely on them so much .. I jsut don’t know what would happen if that were the case…How’d I’d love for war crime trials for EVERYONE. I will sit and watch the trials ALL day and enjoy it.

      • PROPHET.T

Nice dream to get rid of everyone of them, yet it is just a dream;we both know it
The reason I would want to keep the 3 top seats allocated as they are, is because i think we need a transitional period to get to aN ideal nonsectarian system.I’m basically bribing the sectarian leaders to go along with my reforms, otherwise, they would never, unless Lebanese youth learn to be as courageous as their Egyptian brothers.
At lease I f you have the president and the PM elected directly, it will create a political situations where alliances are build politically ,instead of sectarian. No sect can claim to own a political position anymore.
