On June 7, 2011, President Barack Obama appointed Dr. Azizah al-Hibri, Founder and Chair of KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).

After the announcement of her appointment to the two-year term, Leonard Leo, the Chair of USCIRF, remarked: “My fellow Commissioners and I are most pleased to welcome Professor al-Hibri to the Commission. She comes with a distinguished record of service as a human rights advocate devoted to the protection of freedom of religion for people of all faiths, and we look forward to working with her”.

USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan U.S. federal government commission. USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and the leadership of both political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives. USCIRF’s principal responsibility is to review the facts and circumstances of violations of religious freedom internationally and to make policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and Congress.

Dr. al-Hibri is the Founder and Chair of KARAMAH , a non-profit organization dedicated to contributing to the understanding and promotion of human rights worldwide through education, legal outreach, and advocacy (http://www.karamah.org). Dr. al-Hibri is a Professor at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. She is a former professor of Philiosphy and founding editor of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy. She is also the recipient of the First Freedom Award for the State of Virginia in 2007 from the Council for America’s First Freedom.

For the past twenty years, Dr. al-Hibri has written extensively on issues of Muslim women’s rights, Islam and democracy, and humans rights in Islam, and is widely published in law journals and other legal publications. Dr. al-Hibri has lectured extensively within the United States, Europe, and the Muslim world at universities, religious and interfaith institutions, community centers, governmental agencies, think tanks, and various public forums. Currently, Dr. al-Hibri is completing a book on the Islamic marriage contract in U.S. courts.

crossed, are you trying to fool us or yourself? hate? where is the hate in her comment? I see nothing but truth. mohamed(your prophet) said a woman is deficient in the brain <<< shame on your prophet for being a women hating pig.
your quran says to the man: "beat your wife if you fear dissobedience…" not even if she did anything but if he thinks she did then he should beat her, read sura al nisa2 aya 34.
who is the hater here? the one teaching to beat women or the one pointing out the hatefull teachings?
I know how your one track muslim brain works, soon you will label me a hater as well.
if you cant handle the teachings of your cult then you need to leave the cult 🙂

ideologies need to be criticized and looked at under a microscope, islam on the other hand resists any critical thinking or research(with death threats), look at sulman rushdie for instance he is still to this day having to walk around with bodyguards, look at theodore van goch and many many more that paid with their lives for criticizing a stupid ideology. islam is a savage barbarian cult hell bent on world domination by subjugation of all others, and if you are a muslim and are atleast honest with yourself and have a shred of dignity left in you, then you would admit it to yourself, at the least, and move on away from such hate mongering ideology

your prophet taught that in order for you to enter janna and collect 72 virgins you must die in jihad fi sabeel allah, what kind of god is this that you worship? a helpless thing that needs men to fight battles in it's honor? yes, i agree with Mary: how can an educated person ever believe anything that desert rat mohamed ever conjured up?

Take it easy dude, we should all be proud to have a Lebanese lady in such position no matter what. Look at bottom of the article, she’s identified as Lebanese-American. Also she is the chair of Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights. That tells you she is trying to change things.

You need to relax. You say you want to criticize Islam, which is fine you have the right. But if you want to make a point you shouldn’t insult the religon like that. I’m also not going to debate this with you because I have my answers and I’m happy with my religon. I support your right to put Islam under the microscope, but I call you a bigot, and an anti-semite based on how you’re doing it. With all due respect.

On a side note, you know nothing of the prophet (pbuh).

At the same time you forgot that the Muslims believe that Mary was a virgin, and that Jesus was a prophet.
Calm down a little man, if Lebanon was filled with people like you on both sides we’d be killing eachother until now.
Be happy there is a Lebanese lady in the American government, doesnt matter the religion.

@twitter-310093134:disqus , how is shame put on her? If she was raised in the faith and if your parents were Muslim you would grow up learning and believing in Islam and dont deny that. She earned her spot in the government, and what the hell does this have to do with religion? Politics + Religion = Fail. If a Lebanese Christian was put in the US Government and people started swearing on Jesus Christ how does that make sense?

This is why the Lebanese never will advance because a French Christian means more to a Christian Lebanese than a Muslim Lebanese, and a Pakistani Muslim means more to a Lebanese Muslim than a Christian. When we can start all treating eachother like a Lebanese other than a religion. One last question 7akibalash if your daughter or son fell in love with a Muslim, would you spit on them and kick them out of your house? Just because they want to marry a Muslim? Or would you except what they have chosen in their life and be a more excepting person.

I wonder how 5 persons like this posting? There are lots of (Ayat) in the Holy Qura’an that I disagree with or
don’t understand, but I can’t say a single world of what you said about Prophet Mouhammad. I don’t know
about your religion if any, but as a devoted Christian I say “La Toudinou ky la toudanu.” We shouldn’t judge
any one and issue a convicting verdict on any Prophet or person, as this act is the job of God Almighty only.

crossed, I know your filthy prophet very well, dont be sensitive now, just because I called a 54 yr old man, who thighs a 6 yr old baby till she’s 9 then screws her, a filthy person. your prophet, who raped women(like safiya) after killing their husbands, fathers, whole families and whole tribes, is a prophet of satan at best. the guy who orders the killing of an 82 yr old lady (UMM QIRFA by tying her between two camels and splitting her in half) because she wrote a poem criticizing him. How can allah be so stupid to pick a child molestor/rapist/murderer to be his spokesman?
mohamed is the prophet of satan not GOD.
address my points and arguments, dont try attacking my character cause that would be ad-hominem and a clear failure on your part to measure up intellectually.

“a clear failure on your part to measure up intellectually”… Right. Because intellects use that kind of language. I never once attacked your character. All I said was if you want people to  intellectually debate with you, you should probably show respect to the topic, wheather or not you agree with it.
Like I said, I have no desire to debate with someone like you. It’s just a waste of time. While I do support your right of free speech, you should probably use it with responsibility if you want real replies.
