STL indicts four Hezbollah members over Hariri car bomb

Lebanon’s senior prosecutor has received criminal indictments for four members of the Shia militant group Hezbollah, who are accused of assassinating the country’s former prime minister Rafiq Hariri in a car bomb attack six years ago.

The move is a significant step in an investigation into the attack that killed Hariri and 21 others on the Beirut waterfront on 14 February 2005.

Security was immediately tightened in the city after investigators from the Hague-based Special Tribunal for Lebanon visited the offices of the prosecutor general, Sayyed Merza, who now has the discretion to name the suspects.

Within minutes of the meeting finishing, Lebanese media outlets named the men as Assad Sabra, Hassan Issa, Salim Ayachhe and Moustaf Badredine, all senior members of Hezbollah. Hariri’s son, Saad, welcomed the indictments and called it a “historic moment”.

Hezbollah did not respond immediately to the indictments which, if they led to convictions, would pose a serious threat to the group’s claim as a nationalist resistance movement.

One senior official said this morning that Hezbollah felt it had done enough to prepare for the indictments with a lengthy and vocal campaign to discredit the investigation.

Elsewhere, members of Hariri’s political bloc called on the Lebanese parliament to continue support for the tribunal, which Lebanon partly funds.

Hezbollah and its political allies, roughly half the country’s Druze and Christians, had been trying to force a government led by Saad Hariri, to withdraw support for the tribunal and stop funding it.

After realising Hariri would not agree, Hezbollah and its allies quit the cabinet in January, causing the collapse of the unity government. The bloc now has a slim majority in government, which it will likely use to target the tribunal.

Lebanon’s cabinet will distribute a policy statement on Friday on how to deal with the tribunal. Regardless of its stance, the tribunal will hold hearings in The Hague later this year.

The legitimacy of its claims will likely first be contested in districts of Lebanon, which remain deeply split and seemingly implacably aligned behind sectarian banners.

    Hezbollah- The Zionist Resistance.

Lebanon has become disgusting, i don’t know why i didn’t leave this nation in my life.
I cant honestly blame all the Lebanese who left Lebanon, they probably are enjoying their life.

Nasrallah said he will cut the hand off anyone who arrests his members,
some nice couple years were going to have.

The Nation of Lebanon is already gone… They call them expats. We take our LEBANESE culture outside with us and leave behind the Persian and the Arab cultures.

Be careful, my friend. The Jews tried that last time we left our land, and now that same imported Arab culture you’re complaining about is trying to keep us from coming back to it. My advice to you is don’t leave, because the Arabs have a tendency to move into the areas you vacate, and then claim you were never there in the first place.

Same thing is happening to the Copts in Egypt, the Berbers in North Africa, and to the Assyrians in Iraq. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen to the Lebanese too.

Consider us lucky that we are 40% of Lebanon still.
If you bring all the Lebanese from Brazil (Which are mostly Christian) Lebanon will have an extra 10 Million Christian Lebanese, of course this will never happen.
I heard a lot of Israelis are also leaving Israel, is this true?

You should see here in Lebanon how most Christians are selling their land, its shameful.

Why not? No jobs, no respect or protection, and no peace. It’s a way of turning the other cheek.

It’s true what you say about the huge Lebanese diaspora, but I have to say that when I lived in America, that all the Lebanese that I knew, just like the Jews in the diaspora, were very very proud of their culture and heritage. Much more than the average American of European origin who’s forgotten his roots. So just like how the Jews returned to Israel after so many years, maybe there’s hope that the Lebanese will come back too.

I guess the situation in Lebanon is not so stable at the moment and the memories of the civil war are still painful for many in the diaspora. But do you think there is ever a chance, perhaps when Hezbollah is gotten rid of once and for all, and that weasel Assad is out of power, and Israel and Lebanon finally have peace, and our region finally turns into the peaceful paradise it was meant to be, that all the sons of Lebanon will return to their homeland?

And like you said it’s true that a lot of Israelis are leaving Israel. They say around 750,000 Israelis (~10% of the population) live abroad. I’m actually the American-born child of an Israeli expat. But after I finished college, I decided to come back. Just always felt more at home here.
But you’re right. it is shameful. Zionism is all about the negation of the diaspora. People who leave have this stigma that we waited so long and worked so hard to get our country back, and then when we finally return, we leave. The shame is evident even in our language. In Hebrew, when a Jew returns to Israel it’s called “Aliyah” (ascending) and an arriving immigrant is called an “Oleh” (riser), while moving away from Israel is called “Yeridah” (descending) and an departing emigrant is called a “yored” (faller).

You’re an idiot! Why do you kid yourself? You know damn well that regardless of religion we are all Lebanese. Do you just disregard DNA evidence that we all share common ancestors, the Phoenicians. You and your like are the reason Lebanon is a backward country that is fragmented along religious lines. Get over yourself, your shit stinks just like the rest of the Lebanese people. Arabs are Lebanese, if you don’t like it you can move to Israel. You know you will be welcome there, anyway that is where your loyalties lie.

        -Peace

Arabs are Lebanese? Man you are stupid, not all of them are Arabs infact you can go get your DNA checked and see your ancestors. Lebanese are mixed some have Arab, Phonecian, European or Mediterranean genes. If you insist on Hannibal to move to Israel, then get your ass to Iran. Shitpicker.

Are you proud of it? Hope you are.
Make sure before you go to sleep tonight that you pray to the flag that has the green AK47 with the yellow background.
I will pray on the Cedars for nature is more powerful than the Persians that claim to be Lebanese, evil doesn’t last long.

Shitforbrains, I was just pointing out that certain religious groups don’t have a monopoly on being Lebanese. You can be a muslim and still be lebanese. A DNA study was undertaken by professionals and they showed that with out a doubt a maronite is no more linked to phoeniciains than a muslim is.  Once we are united as Lebanese and not fragmented along religious lines Lebanon will see better days. Now go and get your panties out of your ass!!
“We take our LEBANESE culture outside with us and leave behind the Persian and the Arab cultures.” What do you think your butt buddy Hannibal meant by this statement??  That arab culture is somehow different than Lebanese culture, give me a break.  I would bet money that Hannibal is a maronite.

In the case of Lebanon it has lasted far too long.

Your beloved Hariri raped this country! In the process of rebuilding Lebanon he made billions, How? Well, he gave his construction company all the contracts and overcharged the Lebanese people while he lined his and his buddies pockets. What he built in Beirut is only affordable to maybe 5% of the Lebanese people. After all that I still do not believe that he should have been targeted and who ever killed him are heartless murderers, but I also believe the STL is being manipulated to target the Hezzi movement.

    • Anonymous

Yeah Hariri raped this country, remember when Hariri was responsible for the death of thousands of Lebanese oh man what a day that was.

What did Nasrallah do for this country, then speak.

    • Anonymous

Still gave people work to do. And they killed him AFTER he retired, and in such a way that 200 other people were killed, maimed and injured. Truly criminal.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I guess he did give some people work. I will give him credit for that. “such a way that 200 other people were killed” How did this number get so large? The article states that 21 others where killed along with Hariri, yet you inflate the # 10 times the actual figure. Not trying to say that 21 innocent people getting killed is okay, actually it was criminal even if he was the only one killed.

@ Olivepicker .. If you are going to quote, then quote all the line.

Beiruti … YES he does but you know for who not for the Lebanese just in the south where they have built the state within the state called little IRAN. They use Lebanese money, the rest of the country suffer from the guns and the crimes they do while they give thier people free education and hospitals. Not bad ha.  This is why people support this crimal group who have taken Lebanon hostage

    Be well

Lock them (Hezbollah) up through away the key. Those who interfere let them follow the same fate. It seems they are a law unto themselves and is holding Lebanon ransom.
