Israel names prisoners to be freed in swap deal

Israel has made public the names of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners it will free in exchange for soldier Gilad Shalit as part of a deal it reached with Hamas.

Israelis who oppose the freeing of the prisoners, some serving life sentences for deadly attacks, now have 48 hours to appeal to the country’s highest court to prevent the release.

The court is not expected to intervene, however. The deal was approved on Tuesday by a large majority in the government and has broad public support.

Shalit was captured in June 2006 by Palestinian militants who tunnelled into Israel from the Gaza Strip. He has been held in the Hamas-ruled territory ever since.

The repatriation of captured soldiers, alive or dead, has long been an emotionally charged issue for Israelis. Many have served in the military and see their return as sacrosanct. But they also feel a sting over the release of convicted killers.

The first phase of the prisoner swap involves 450 men and 27 women. Another 550 will be released in about two months, according to officials familiar with the Egyptian-mediated deal.

Some prisoners originally from the West Bank will be sent to the Gaza Strip and other prisoners will be exiled abroad.

One Israeli group opposed to the deal, the Almagor Terror Victims’ Association, said the release would lead to further violence and abduction attempts and robs victims of the right to live in peace.

Israel’s Prison Service posted the list of those to be let out on its website.

Among the more prominent names is Ahlam Tamimi, who worked as a reporter with a local television station before joining the Hamas armed wing. She received 16 life sentences for helping choose places for suicide attacks and was accused of taking bombers to some of the locations, including a Jerusalem pizzeria in 2001, where 15 people were killed.

Also to be released is Mohammed Al-Sharatha, a leader of the Hamas special elite fighting unit “101″ which kidnapped two Israeli soldiers in 1989. The two soldiers were killed. Sharatha was arrested in 1989 and sentenced to three life terms and a separate 30-year-term.

The sort of people being freed are the same sort that used to cut off men’s genitals and stuff them in their mouths in the Lebanese civil war.

He probably doesn’t – but since no-one agreed to shooting them all (as would have happened in Libya or Syria or Taliban-land) then just think of how much the Israelis are going to save in food purchases after this. Gotta like that. :-)

Hello there! Well, I’m in the minority of 21% that would give a resounding NO(!)   It will cause an upsurge in terrorism and legitimize the hate crimes that those people have done. Attacking our soldiers is one thing but luring a teenage boy somewhere in order to murder him for being a Hebrew is a hate crime. Bombing a pizza restaurant is nothing but mass murder. Even the lynching of soldiers in Ramallah is on the border line of legitimate resistance. Did you see what they did to them? That had nothing to do with their uniforms.

Also, note that it’s absolutely safe to speak Arabic here but the utterance of a word in Hebrew in areas A or B can land you six feet under.

Guess I better not mix up the ‘Shaloms’ and ‘Salaams’ … better stick with ‘Howdy’ … ;-)
Anyway .. yes .. it’s all despicable for sure, and from despicable educations. Hopefully some are too old to lift a gun now.

I have no problem with Salaams 5thDrawer. I just wish that the other peoples of this region would get over their cognitive dissonance and accept the Shaloms too.

Again, I repeat!  Israel’s value of human life, barukh hashem, of its citizens is worth 1,000 Palestinian terrorists.  When will the Arabs value life in the same way?

Shoulda shot them all.Israel needs to instal the death penalty for terrorism, just like the ARABS do.

Why should those terrorists be freed? They have taken the lives of so many innocent people.

Ask the world’s ‘bleeding-heart liberals’ who believe that Iran, Syria, PLO, Hamas, and Hezzbolla will be friendly to Jews and stop sending rockets into Israel if only so-named ‘Palestinians’ could move back into Israel, and wherever else they came from 4 generations ago, and call a chunk of it a new ‘country’ of Palestine.
I am not denying, of course, that the people who came out of Palestine were never treated fairly. The question should be about who caused them the most of their problems in the first place, and kept the problems alive, and made them think it was all Israel’s doing. And then, you may find why some all over the world are so confused by it all, that they think many murderers should be set free so that a single kidnapped soldier could return home.
