Assad granting Syrian citizenship to Hezbollah, Iraqi Shiites

Saudi Al Watan newspaper quoted its sources in the Syrian opposition as saying that “the authorities of Damascus have been granting Lebanese Hezbollah members and Iraqi militia Shiites the Syrian nationality , and has been registering them as residents of the city of Sweida, which is predominantly Druze.Sweida is known as the largest city in Jabal al-Arab, known as the “cradle of the Great Revolution” in the face of the French occupation led by Sultan Pasha al-Atrash in 1925.

According to Al Watan sources Syrian president Bashar Al Assad is aiming to change the demographics of Sweida with the aim of confronting the Sunnis who are very strong south of Syria.

This is not the first time this issue comes up. Reports circulated in mid July that Iran was also seeking to extend its influence in Jabal al-Arab or Jabal al-Druze, through local agents. This according to the report included the settling of Lebanese and Syrian Shiites displaced by the fighting in the area near Sweida ( Daraa) . This is reportedly part of an Iranian plan to grant the Syrian nationality to 750,000 Shiites from the Middle East. According to the report the Iranians have deposited $2 billion into the Real Estate Bank of Syria to purchase land in this area

Forcing the minorities to join the war
Also around mid July Al Arabiya reported that the Syrian government is trying to force the minorities to engage in the Syrian civil war against the mostly Sunni rebels and for this reason it has been providing members of the Lebanese Shiite militant group, Hezbollah, as well as Shiite fighters from Iraq with “forged” Syrian identity cards carrying Druze names.

The Druze are a minority in the Middle East and live primarily in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine ( present day Israel ) and the United States.

” Such action by the criminal Syrian regime could create a conflict between the Druze and the Sunni communities”, according to Ayman Maarouf an analyst in the Jabal Al Arab where most of the Druze in Syria live .

This development comes after the Syrian regime failed to involve the Druze community to fight against the rebels, according to Syrian observers .

Since the beginning of the uprising in March 2011 against the Assad regime, Syria’s Druze community like most minority groups in the country tried to remain neutral and did not voice their opposition to Assad, who is an Alawite, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Soueida the capital of the Druze stronghold of Jabal al Arab and which borders Jordan and Daraa has reportedly been used as a channel of entry into Daraa by Hezbollah and other Shiite and Assad forces to fight the rebels, according to the report.

The Damascus regime has reportedly sent a number of influential Lebanese Druze to persuade the Druze community in Syria to take part in the fight alongside Assad forces against the rebels but instead were instructed by their religious leaders to stay out of the conflict.

Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt , who heads up the Progressive Socialist Party has been urging the Druze community in Syria to join the rebels against the Syrian regime. But others like former minister Wiam Wahab, a close ally of Hezbollah and the Syrian regime has been calling on the Druze to fight against the rebels.
In a statement issued last November , Jumblatt said “Syria’s Druze community should join the Syrian rebels who are shedding their blood in heroic battles against oppression on a daily basis.”

“ Failure of the Druze to join the rebels does not fall in line with their heroic stances during the great Syrian Revolution that overthrew the French mandate,” Jumblatt stressed.

But it IS everywhere … and we should not talk about ‘honour’ either, should we?
Killing is killing. You should have stopped after ‘don’t get involved in the fighting’.

      2. You need to know who started the war in Lebanon first before accusing the Druze of killing “innocent Women and Children”. You started it and we ended it. Do not teach us lesson in history, we know it very well.

We did not start anything, we got killed when Assad helped you cowards to kill your neighbors because the Syrians killed your leader and then Geagea and company came to the mountains to be cowboys. Don’t tell me you finished anything on the expense on the innocent. Why did you not chase Geagea? because you are cowards and followed the orders of your masters Assad back then and the Israelis. History is full your back stabbing. As the MOSLIMS SAY EAT DINNER AT DRUSE HOUSE AND GO SLEEP AT THE CHRISTIANS WHEN VISING THE MOUNTAINS.

          1. What are you talking? We are minorities (less than 10% of lebanon’s population), if we did not do this, we would have been wiped out of Mount Lebanon. I do not want to sound “Ta-i-fi”, I do believe that we can not live without Christians. We opened our home to you hundreds of years ago and you back stabbed us. The historian Kamal salibi said “Historically, the close relations between us in Lebanon dated back to the sixteenth century, when the Druze of the Shuf, whose livelihood depended on silk production, first opened their country to large-scale Christian-and principally Maronite-peasant migration from the north, to help produce the silk. To encourage this Christian immigration, the leading Druze chiefs of the area made generous donations of land to Maronite and other Christian monastic orders for the building of monasteries and churches; tradition has it that the Druze villages where the Christian newcomers settled came to be called ‘honoured villages (diya‘ musharrafa)’. Meanwhile, as the Druze emirs holding the iltizam of the Druze area gained control over the adjacent Maronite nahiye of Kisrawan, the management of the affairs of Mount Lebanon developed into a close
            Druze-Maronite partnership.

Having the advantage of numbers and of privileged external connections, the Maronites eventually started to gain the upper hand in this partnership. This development appears to have elicited little Druze concern in its initial stages but, before long, tensions began to rise. Incited and openly backed by France, the Maronite clerical and feudal leaderships began, from the 1840s, to seek complete dominance over the whole of Mount Lebanon, causing the Druze to feel dangerously threatened on their very home ground. When the Druze reaction, in full force, finally came in 1860, its violence was such that the Christian parties who had provoked it fled the scene, leaving the defenceless Christians of the Druze regions to their fate.

From that time and by liberating Syria from the Turks and Lebanon from French, we had this reputation as fierce warriors and others even are scared to sleep in our villages.

I hate to sound like I am proud of it, I am not. “Tenzikir wma tenaad”.

          2. Hannibal Avatar

You have it wrong my friend… The 1860 violence was between the poor against the rich. In the Christian areas the poor started attacking the rich regardless of whether they were Maronites or not. The Ottomans fearing the Maronite connection with the west incited the uprising by poisoning the ears of the Druze leadership who incidentally were rich and turned it into a religious war. The ruse worked because we were never good at building a nation but city-states with religious zou3aamas pretty much like what we are doing today.

          3. I agree with you at that point that we do not have loyalty to the “HOME” Al Watan, but to the zou3aamas, unfortunately. We have to change this mentality and move forward toward ONE LEBANON. I hope that every Lebanese thinks of Lebanon as what the President Sleiman thinks and acts.

If I go back to 1860 in Family history, I am sure happy to have been coming alive 100 years later … although it seems some of the ‘thinking’ has not shifted much. But HOW do you know the history other than by that? What school has a verified text-book of the complete history of Lebanon IN Lebanon now? Especially for the youngest students?

Hey libnan1, I am from the Shouf as well and a Xtian, and believe me, not all the Druze are the same. The Druze that committed those atrocities are only a handful. I lost 7 family members to the Druze militias, but 5 were protected by Druze families. Don’t forget that the Xtians this time round (1982) did a lot of damage as well. Breeh is a very good example + a lot of other villages. I am aware that most of the Xtians that did the damage in the Shouf area are mostly from the north, but they are the ones with the big Kahuna’s.
The few hundred Xtians that were killed and back stabbed as revenge for Kamal Jumblatts death was a cowardly act, and I still do not know how that happened. After all it was the Syrians who killed him.
